How it works

A stump grinder chews the stump down below the ground, leaving a pile of wood chips. Most crews can fit a smaller machine through a regular gate. The chips can be used as mulch, or the hole can be filled with topsoil and seeded.

Before the crew comes

Call 811 a few business days ahead so underground utility lines can be marked. Many tree companies make this call for you; ask.
Mark any sprinkler heads, low-voltage lighting or invisible dog fence near the stump.
Clear toys, hoses and loose stones from around the area.
Keep kids and pets inside while the grinder is running.
